2023 โ€“ Review

Overall feeling – life is good but tiring ๐Ÿ˜‚!

Reading

15! More than double of last year, really felt on a role later part of the year, possibly because some of the books were so good. Maybe correlated to child age though, will be interesting to see how next year goes!

I Started So Iโ€ฆWonโ€™t Finish

Maybe another reason I read more, I was more brutal with the cut, which probably lead to finding more I really enjoyed.

State Of Wonder
The Poppy War
Kleptopia
Say Nothing
Serious sweet
London Bridge in America
Signal Moon

Writing

Only 4 and that includes the SITIR which aren’t really writing. I feel like I want to write (but not sure why) but I just haven’t found something that keeps me consistent. Lower priority really but will persevere when the mood takes me.

Coding/Tech/Work

Explored a fair bit.

Spent a decent amount of time on ZK. Still find it super interesting. I don’t actually have the skills or motivation to contribute at the base layer of the cryptography. There are a number of interesting protocols that products can use to build ZK applications (e.g. Axiom, Risc0) and I’ve played around with them but sometimes they feel like products looking for a problem. Will keep following though.

I really enjoyed diving into the world of on-chain games via MUD/Lattice. Originally I entered a hackathon. I then got invited down to London to their week of exploration, this was really interesting and fun, got to meet some interesting folks and experienced a different culture than the DeFi one I’m so used to. Following that I made a couple of fairly large contributions to their codebase and I enjoyed getting some shoutouts for that. One thing I learned through this was I don’t have nearly as much spare time as I used to for hackathons/contributions and I ended up putting a bit too much pressure on myself to get things done.

Balancer had a pretty crazy year. The vulnerability/hack was wild to be part of. General bear market sentiment and burnout saw a number of big changes personnel wise. The onsite in Milan was great and personally I felt this was an inflection point leading to some clear direction for the next stage and I can get behind that. End of year brought the new challenge of absorbing integrations responsibilities into our team and excited to see how that goes.

Next Steps

I’ve been taking some time to figure out what motivates me, what the priorities are and what I should work on. Still not 100% clear but definitely have things a bit straighter.

Going to give my best shot at this next stage at Balancer. I still really appreciate working there. I like the leadership and my teammates and DeFi as an industry still has huge potential for impact. This work should fulfill my main itch for coding related work.

I should be brutal at making sure any side projects/hackathons/contributions I start are small, stress free and genuinely interesting. This will avoid unnecessary burnout and time wasted – I especially don’t want to sacrifice family time.

I’m going to try using some of my spare time to research, explore and use new tech. I enjoy this kind of thing (and have been doing it in an unsystematic way for a long time). Most likely crypto related but doesn’t have to be. Few resons for this – best way to find interesting things to work on, potential airdrops, find products for my own personal use. Could be a natural writing topic too.

The downfall of wirecard – seems like more to the story but pretty entertaining. 3.5

Living – Enjoyed this and made me never want to work in a shit job! 3.8

The Killer – slick, I liked it, stupid ending though. 4

Health

Overall health feels good, maybe more aches and pains and tiredness but to be expected really.

Still going with BJJ, originally felt kind of negative about my effort here but looking back I competed in a competition (won 2 lost 2) and got promoted to 2 stripes so thats pretty good! I think the feeling of negativity comes from 2 places. Firstly I am comparing my progress to others – I should stop this as we’re each running our own race (also I’m not comparing myself to the guys who didn’t stick it, and there’s lots of them)! Secondly, deep down I probably know I can give more. This is perhaps a bit unfair to myself given the fact I’m comparing it to my past rugby efforts, life and priorities are different now. I do think I can try to push myself a bit harder by staying for all the rolls and not bailing but the main thing is to keep going and continue making this a part of my life.

2022 โ€“ Review

Overall feeling – life is good!

Reading

6 books this year. Sounds like a small amount but some were big! The ones that were large were also really good so doesn’t feel like a waste. Overall I think I’d benefit from being more selective with what I choose to read, try and spend some time on quality that I enjoy so I don’t give up.

I Started So Iโ€ฆWonโ€™t Finish

Felt like I started a lot of unenjoyable books this year but the list isn’t that long. Probably spent too long on them before giving up.

  • Alexander Hamilton (This started off ok but got a bit boring and seemed super long so I stopped)
  • A Memory Called Empire
  • The Last Green Valley
  • Bear Head (got to 90% but couldn’t push through!)

Writing

Somewhat of an improvement writing 7 posts this year. Feel like I haven’t found a cadence or something that really works yet. Maybe aim for 1 a month this year?

Coding

Overall code quality feels massively improved and I feel productive. Learning a lot about architecture, especially how that relates to a crypto SDK. Feel like having some real maths skills combined with coding could be a super power (e.g. ZKP). Wonder where I go next…

Watching

23 watched over the year. Seems like less time for movies again. Probably spending more time watching crappy tv and don’t think we managed many cinema trips at all!

The Gentleman – Guy Ritchie gangsta. Good start to the year!
The Big Short – interesting viewing during this crypto crash. Scary.
Munich – learned something new about the build up to ww2.
Hell Or High Water – Good modern bank robber movie.
The green night – on the way to Denver. Good but strange medieval story.
Hell or High Water – decently watchable although can’t really remember what it was about already ๐Ÿ˜…
Power Of The Dog – actually pretty good. Challenging. Cumberbatch very good.
The Rescue – Cave rescue, wow!!
Final Account – brutal but shows its not so simple.
The Northman – Weird but pretty good.
Hustle – decent bball y’all. Reminds me of the old days โ˜บ๏ธ
Everything everywhere all at once – never seen anything like that before! Was worth watching.
Many Saint Of Newark – actually not as good as I hoped but it’s the Sopranos!
All This Mayhem – skateboarding! What a story!
Man from Toronto – bad but then good. Woody pulls through!
The Gray Man – a bad bond. Over the top action.
Prey – the predator is back!!
I came by – decent creepy murder thriller
Licorice Pizza – best movie of the year?! Like how it mingles with different lifes.
Connor McGregor – these guys are a different breed
The Stranger – pretty dark and a bit arty but thought this was decent. 4/5.
The Swimmers – surprisingly good. We’re so lucky to be born where we are! 3.5/5
Kim Dotcom: Caught In The Web – Ooft. The interesting thing is the how similar this is to the FTX drama. And how the same muppets (influencers) are involved.

Health

Still not drinking! At this stage I barely care. The times I’ve been out and really fancied it soon turns into thank f**k I didn’t when everyone goes downhill quick. Sundays are way nicer!

In last years review I was waiting to see if I was going to stick BJJ out and I did! Been at it over a year now and feel like I’ve finally found a worthy replacement for rugby. Training at least 4hours per week and feel like I’m progressing which is decent. Might be a competition in 2023?

Probably worst thing is I spend too long at desk. Need to push myself to get a routine where I break to go out or do something. Possibly getting an ebike, doing more walks and jumping on rowing would be good.

2021 โ€“ Review

Bit late with this but life is busy right now! I pretty much enjoyed 2021, life is good ๐Ÿ™‚

Reading

Managed to get through 12 books – pretty happy with that even though some weren’t necessarily the best quality. Feel like I found some really good ones too.

I Started So Iโ€ฆWonโ€™t Finish

Because lifes too short and thereโ€™s too many books I would enjoy reading Iโ€™m trying to stop any that Iโ€™m struggling with. Was more brutal this year than last and considering I read more books than 2020 and feel like I enjoyed more too it might be working? This year I started on:

  • The Kill Artist
  • Range
  • Eat Like A Fish
  • No Rules Rules
  • Reminiscences Of A Stock Broker
  • Our Man

Writing

I only published 4 blog posts. I normally post technical stuff and I think 2021 was pretty full on at Balancer with some pretty intense times. In general when it came to clocking off I didn’t have the mental energy to spend it on writing about what I’d been working on and just chilled. This year it would be cool to try and write more about what I’m doing as I’m going.

Coding

There some kind of advice/saying about joining a team of people that are better than you because they’ll push you to their level. Well, that is definitely how it feels at Balancer. Learning lots and striving to be better. I think it’s working and I feel pretty good with Typescript now. Looking forward to building out the Balancer SDK which should teach me a lot more about best practices and writing code suitable for the outside world.

Watching

34 – a big increase on last year. Must be because Gracie is a good sleeper!

Fight Club – Classic and still good. Decent last tune too.
Devil All The Time – Good story. Not very uplifting though!
Flint – like the series, disgusting and horrible
Song Bird – oh dear.
Gold – pretty decent.
Perks of being a wallflower – excellent and emotional and awesome soundtrack.
El Camino – Finally watched it. Not bad. Poor Jessie.
Graffiti Wars – Robbo Vs Banksi. Enjoyable and sad ending.
Operation Finale – Another good Nazi movie.
The Founder – bit of a rubbish start but improved and interesting story.
New Of The World – clumsy plot but I like a Western ๐Ÿ˜Š
The White Tiger – I enjoyed it
Capone – wasn’t the best but interesting enough
Ninja assassin – haha wow even worse than it sounded
The sisters brothers – was enjoyable but I’m not sure if it’s the same as the book – I can’t remember!
Touch the wall – not bad. Swimming is an unrewarding sport!
First Man – really good!
Sound of metal – Excellent
Indie Game The Movie – Decent watch. Pretty emotional seeing those guys put it in!
We Live In Public – What a wild and whacky ride of a life! It’s hard to be a visionary!
Baby Teeth – good but very sad/happy
Les Miserables – Decent French crime
Black Summer – Not a movie but bloody brilliant. That last escape scene by the black guy was something else!
Wild Bill – Good movie. Lucky to be me.
Pusher – Very gritty and quite unpleasant watch!
Shotgun Stories – quite good brotherly revenge
Hard tide – Decent low budget British alternative gang stuff
Suicide Squad – first cinema trip in over a year!
Ballad Of Lefty Brown – quite slow but a watchable Western
Kate – Woody can pick some bad ones ๐Ÿ˜‚
Bruised – Not bad female version of Rocky
Never give up – Alex Ferguson doc. Decent. Shows the sacrifices again!
Man of steel – long but decent. Think I’ve seen if before though?!
Don’t look up – Really good. End of world and humans are scum bags ๐Ÿ˜‚

Health

Still not drinking – so that’s a positive result!

The goal was not to become a couch potatoe – I think that’s also been achieved although it’s not been easy. Found it really hard to let go of rugby but training was less appealing and my AC went twice more throughout the year so being a regular 1st team player is a fate I have accepted. One thing I’m really glad I did was play a game with Gracie and Elaine watching – especially because I got a try, biggest hit award and man of the match. I was proud!

I’ve stuck it out pretty well in the home gym. Continually progressing with the weight training. Also bought a Concept Rowing Machine and do at least one 8min session on that, progressively getting further distance most times.

Also it feels like I might finally have found a replacement – joined a BJJ course in Januaray and have really been enjoying it. We’ll see if that continues.

2020 – Review

Strange year! Many, many people can’t wait to see the back of it but I had a lot of positives and it won’t be a year I’ll ever want to forget. I’ll always look at it with pleasure because Gracie Milne Grant came into the world โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ.

Reading

Managed to get through 9 books in the year โ€“ 2 less than last year, which was 2 less than the year before but I think I have a good excuse after our new arrival! Also similar to last year I’ve read a LOT of blog/technical articles.

I never managed to stick to my plan of reading at least 30mins per day in the evening reading. Instead of watching crap on TV I’m busy with playtime, bathtime and bedtime!

I Started So I…Won’t Finish

It’s hard for me to walk away from a book after starting but because lifes too short and there’s too many books I would enjoy reading I’m trying to stop any that I’m struggling with. This year I started on:

  • Perdido Street Station
  • Our Man
  • A Perfect Spy (gutted as I was hoping this would be good)

Writing

I published 15 blog posts. I feel like I’m kind of cheating because I’ve started writing posts called – Some Interesting Things I Read, which are a collection of links, etc that I’ve found interesting, want to share and keep links to. Although these aren’t as substantial as some of my previous posts I still think they’re pretty interesting and I feel like they’re less of a chore to write and help me gather my thoughts around things. I did also write some pretty detailed technical posts on some of the things I’ve learned.

At the moment I don’t have a particular target or goal or even an idea of what I want to acheive with blogging. I’m going to keep going the way I have been and see how it unfolds.

Coding

One of things I was excited about in last years review was the prospect of continuing to grow my relationship with Balancer Labs and I’m VERY, VERY happy to say that I started full time with them in March. It was the best move ever. Brilliant team, great project and I’ve had the chance to learn and work on so many different things.

The big goal for this year is do help in any way possible to launch Balancer V2 and help Balancer grow into an even more succesful project. I thing I can have a fun and learn more along the way so I can’t wait!

Watching

23 watched this time – not easy to find time for movies with a crazy girl around!

  • Laundromat – Interesting and good about money laundering, etc. What makes the world go round!
  • Hidden Figures – a bit over the top with the ‘amsuing’ bits but overall very inspiring.
  • Uncut Gems – Hectic! But good.
  • The King – Probably a bit too long but not bad.
  • Hostiles – very good western.
  • High Flying Bird – Basketball business. Can’t decide if I liked it or not.
  • Contagion – Had to watch it again. Mmmhh.
  • The Platform – really original and good.
  • The Titan – pretty weird sci fi
  • Ultras – So-so football hooligans
  • Andrews police one – Depressing
  • The boy who harnessed the wind – Picked by Vicki and not bad.
  • John Candyย Nice
  • Leave No Trace – AGs pick. Really good. Nomad dad and daughter. Emotional.
  • Freaks – Kind of cool but kind of stupid.
  • Collosal – jesus that got stupid
  • I’m thinking of ending things – omg really weird and bad
  • Borat 2 – Mmmh stupid but ok
  • Calm With Horses – Recommended by Andrew and I liked it.
  • White Boy Rick – Decent. Makes you think.
  • Arkansas – really good
  • Trial of the Chicago 7 – good choice by Elaine for once
  • Fight Club – Classic

Health

I didn’t include this previously, I think I kind of took my health and fitness for granted and just imagined it would always be the same. Training twice a week for rugby and playing on a Saturday meant I’ve always been fit with injuries being the only real concern.

Realistically, because of my age, I was going to have to wind down playing wise and with a new member of the family commiting that much time was probably not going to be an option but Covid put an emergency stop to everything! And it’s been tough. I’ve purchased and setup a punch bag and rowing machine along with my old weights equipment and I stick to a pretty good routine now but training solo isn’t the same as training with 15mates. Motivation can be hard and the intensity/reward isn’t the same as busting your pan in on the pitch. Mental health wise I miss the crack, the competition (the chance to hit people) and just the escape – there’s no better way to switch the brain off than to play/train 80mins of rugby!

Few goals here – if the Covid nonsense isn’t sorted I need to keep going! Keep training, keep fit and don’t become a couch potatoe – Gracie needs a strong dad that she can run around with! If life becomes more normal I feel like I want to keep going with rugby but we’ll see how the body holds up. If it doesn’t work out then I need to find and commit to something else – Judo and golf come to mind right now.

And to finish on a positive note health wise – I’ve now not drunk in 22 months! And damn I feel better for it!
